Water channel required to facilitate the transport of water across membranes . In addition to water; shows also strong glycerol and ammonium transport activities . May be involved in fungal nitrogen (ammonium) support of the plant host in symbiosis . Glycerol accumulation has never been observed in ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi; therefore; glycerol permeability of Lacbi1:391485 might be a relict of the affiliation of the protein to the group of aquaglyceroporins; and other osmotic active compounds (e.g. trehalose or mannitol) may have taken over glycerol function in ECM fungi (Probable).
